Flexible DC-Link Capacitors for VSC-HVDC Converter Valves

Flexible DC transmission is a novel method of power delivery based on Voltage Source Converters (VSCs). It is primarily categorized into three structural configurations: two-level, three-level, and Modular Multilevel Converters. The Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) offers numerous advantages—including low power loss, minimal harmonic distortion, and excellent scalability—and has consequently emerged as the dominant technical solution in the field of flexible DC transmission today. An MMC converter valve consists of three-phase units; each phase unit comprises an upper and a lower bridge arm, and each bridge arm is composed of multiple submodules. The DC support capacitor is a critical component within the submodule; acting as an energy storage element on the DC side of the converter, it supplies the necessary DC voltage to the converter. Furthermore, it serves to buffer DC-side voltage fluctuations during system faults, mitigate DC-side voltage ripple, and provide DC voltage support to the receiving end. DC support capacitors are therefore indispensable to the safe and stable operation of the converter valve, and indeed, to the overall safety and stability of the entire transmission system.
